HARIDWAR: Almost 60% of the government-aided private colleges in the state are being run through acting principals, sources in the higher education department told TOI.
This is despite the fact that a high-level meeting of the department held on May 10 had decided that on receiving a proposal from a college management for appointment of a permanent principal, the director of higher education will expeditiously grant the necessary permission.

Once the permission is granted, the college concerned will complete the appointment process within six months, it was said. Further, it had been decided that in case the college fails to complete the appointment process, the principal's post will be considered abolished forever.
Out of 21 colleges, 12 do not have permanent principals, an official from the higher education directorate said. The official added, "Many of these colleges have so far not even applied for permission to appoint a permanent principal."
The oldest and biggest colleges in the state, barring a few including DWT College, Dehradun, MPG College, Mussoorie and RMP College, Narsan (Haridwar), are making do with officiating principals. These include -- DAV College, DBS College, SGRR College and MKP College (all in Dehradun) with a combined strength of over 40,000.
